What's up with the waste levy?

LGA2

Did you know, that in the 2016-2017 financial year, Queensland inherited 900,000 tonnes of interstate waste? This waste was then disposed of within our landfills, right here in Queensland. That’s nearly 1 million tonnes of rubbish from other states being dumped in our own backyard.

The reason why other states are currently disposing of their waste within our borders is because currently, it’s completely free. Queensland is the only mainland state in Australia that doesn’t have a fee associated with the disposal of rubbish.

The Queensland Government has developed a comprehensive waste management and resource recovery strategy. This strategy will increase recycling and recovery rates, we well as create new jobs for Queenslanders. The strategy is underpinned by a waste disposal levy which will come into effect on 1st July, 2019.

The waste levy zones include 39 of the 77 local government areas and will cover around 90% of Queensland’s population. The waste levy will be applicable for:

• Any waste disposed of within the levy zone
• Waste that originates within the levy zone or interstate, and is disposed of within the non-levy zone

There are specific types of waste that are exempt from the waste levy however. These include:

• Waste produced as a result of a natural disaster
• Asbestos-contaminated waste
• Litter and illegally dumped waste collected by the State government and local councils
• Dredge spoil
• Clean earth
• Recycled material

Landfill operators (local councils and private businesses) will pay the levy directly to the Queensland Government. They will then decide how these costs will then be passed through to their customers. Businesses and other organisations will be directly affected by the introduction of the levy.

The levy will be added to the cost of disposing waste to landfill, meaning that the only way to minimise these additional costs will be to reduce the amount of waste you send to landfill.
