Find out how ecoBiz Star Partner Sycamore Health (a clinic in the Caboolture region) reduced their energy and water use.

The free ecoBiz program has assessed the waste, water and energy practices in hundreds of businesses in Queensland and developed case studies to help businesses improve their operations and save money through sustainability.

Sycamore Health offers GP, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, dietetic and psychology services for residents of the Caboolture region.

Sycamore Health’s holistic approach to health also includes caring about the health of our planet. They joined the ecoBiz program to find ways to reduce their energy, water and waste and have become a 2-Star Partner. Since their first coaching session in 2020, Sycamore Health has reduced their energy intensity by nearly 30% and have also implemented initiatives to reduce their water use.

“Thanks to the ecoBiz coaches I was able to clearly see the areas of my business that needed improving. The thorough audit session was really convenient, with Nicole demonstrating a clear aptitude for energy, water and waste processes in the business landscape. She offered practical, effective and cost-considerate solutions, which enabled us to enact change. I’m grateful for the support of ecoBiz in helping Sycamore Health go greener for the good of the planet.” James Sikkema, Owner

KEY INITIATIVES TO REDUCE energy use

Sycamore Health energy and water efficient equipment

  • They have installed a 15kW rooftop solar PV system.
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting was already used, and they added daylight sensors on security lighting and a motion sensor in the toilet so that lights stay off when they are not needed.
  • They set up automation that turns off all TV, office equipment and lighting outside office hours to prevent unnecessary energy use.
  • They purchased more energy-efficient equipment (washing machine, clothes dryer and refrigerator).
  • They use blinds on windows to reduce the heat coming into the building.
  • They set up the air conditioner temperatures as close to ambient temperature as possible while keeping it comfortable for their customers: consultation rooms are at 24°C, and the gym is around 21-22°C.
  • Air conditioners are serviced regularly, and filters are changed every three months to maintain their efficiency.

KEY INITIATIVES TO REDUCE WATER USE

When many health businesses saw a big increase in their water use, Sycamore Health water efficiency was only slightly impacted by the additional washing required to meet stringent health and safety guidelines imposed to reduce risks with COVID-19. They saved water by:

  • Purchasing a water-efficient washing machine;
  • Replacing their kitchen and bathroom faucets with water-efficient alternatives;
  • Installing water-efficient, dual flush toilets.
