Orpheus Island - ecoBiz case studies
Find out how our ecoBiz Star Partner Orpheus Island Lodge (an accommodation provider on the Great Barrier Reef) reduced their energy use.
The free ecoBiz program has assessed the waste, water and energy practices in hundreds of businesses in Queensland and developed case studies to help businesses improve their operations and save money through sustainability.
Orpheus Island Lodge is an all-inclusive, private island lodge on the Great Barrier Reef. The Lodge has14 rooms, suites and villas and can accommodate up to 28 people. Facilities include a bar, restaurant, dining area, reading room, a spa and an infinity pool.
Sustainability is at the core of Orpheus Island Lodge operations. They joined the ecoBiz program in 2021 to continue finding ways to reduce their environmental impact. Orpheus Island was recognised as a Star Partner after an ecoBiz retroactive assessment highlighted the lodge reduced their energy use per guest by 72% between 2018 and 2020.
KEY INITIATIVES TO REDUCE ENERGY USE
In 2018, Orpheus Island Lodge identified most of their carbon emissions came from the diesel burnt in their generator for electricity. In 2019, they installed 810 solar panels (300kW ground-mounted solar PV system with 120kW worth of battery storage). Staff have been trained to maximise the use of solar energy (e.g. running laundry in the middle of the day).
In addition to producing and using clean energy, the resort has measures in place to minimise energy use:
- They use solar hot water.
- They have installed efficient lighting in the restaurant and guest rooms and lights in staff accommodation are being upgraded to LED too.
- Lights are turned off when not in use.
- Guests are encouraged to use ceiling fans and natural ventilation rather than air conditioning when conditions are favourable. Buildings are optimised for natural airflow and rooms have plantation shutters to limit the need for air conditioning.
- They set up timers for the pool pumps (only used in winter months) and the sewage treatment plant.
